Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility solutions, has secured a new contract with the Southern California Regional Rail Authority (Metrolink) to oversee the operation, service, and maintenance of its regional passenger rail network. The contract, valued at approximately $515 million USD (€490 million EUR), spans a five-year period from January 1, 2025, to June 30, 2030, and will engage more than 400 Alstom employees across Southern California. Additionally, the agreement includes an option for a three-year extension, potentially increasing the total contract value to $860 million USD (€817 million EUR).

This new partnership further strengthens Alstom’s long-standing relationship with Metrolink, which dates back over three decades, including the delivery of the first Bilevel coaches. Since 1998, Alstom has been a key maintenance partner for Metrolink’s fleet.

“We are grateful for the trust the Southern California Regional Rail Authority and their Board of Directors has placed in Alstom as we expand our role to support their operations and maintenance needs,” said Michael Keroullé, President of Alstom Americas. “Metrolink customers are doing their part to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, and we are committed to bringing them our experience and dedication to deliver world class service and to help Metrolink prepare to accommodate visitors from around the world during the upcoming global sporting events in Southern California.”

Under the new contract, Alstom will continue providing maintenance services and take on full operational duties across Metrolink’s extensive 545-mile service network. Starting July 1, 2025, over 200 Alstom employees will be mobilized to manage Metrolink’s daily operations.

“We are excited to continue our transition from a traditional commuter railroad to becoming a true regional passenger rail operator with the expanded responsibilities awarded to a world-class organization such as Alstom,” Metrolink CEO Darren Kettle said. “We are grateful for the efforts and dedication of the Amtrak crews who have been operating our Metrolink trains since 2010 and the TransitAmerica Services Inc. team members who have been operating Arrow since that service began in 2022. We know Alstom will work collaboratively over the next several months to ensure a seamless transition and a continued outstanding customer experience.”

The scope of the contract includes train operations, fleet maintenance, crew management, customer service, and facilities upkeep, with the possibility of extending services to materials management. This agreement reinforces Alstom’s position as the leading private provider of Operations and Maintenance services in North America.

Metrolink’s regional passenger rail service is a vital component of Southern California’s transportation infrastructure, offering a safe, reliable, and environmentally sustainable alternative to driving. The service covers 545.6 miles and 67 stations across six counties—Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, and San Diego—linking a wide range of communities across the region.
